History
The Misty Poets were a group of 20th century poets who acted against the Cultural Revolution in China between 1978 and 1980. During this time period, artist were encouraged by Mao Zedong to educate and provide people with revolutionary values. Misty poets challenged Maoist artistic ideology of social realism and were influenced by other contemporary western poetry. Their work was considered obscure, misty or hazy. The most influential artist affliated with this movement were Bei Dao and Mang Ke.
Analysis
Island by Yang Lian, is a poem about the imagery you would see on an island. The author uses vivid imagery to express the way she feels and how her surroundings affect her physically and emotionally. It also tells a story about a girl who is suffering after being, what is seems like, abandoned, on this beautiful island. The girl being described in the poem is not enjoying the beautiful scenery of the island but crying and wondering why she is here with no friends or family.
Literary Devices
Imagery- The author uses imagery when she vividly describes the scenery of the beautiful island. She describes the water, the petals and the trees that are on this island. She uses this imagery to convey her feelings about the island. Lian also uses imagery to help the readers mentally experience the work.
